Living Ethically

#BoldBeliefDevotional by Paul Natekin

Key Bible Verse:

“We are to be ‘without blemish in the midst of a crooked and twisted generation,’ in which we ‘shine as lights in the world.'” — Philippians 2:15 (ESV)

Have you ever thought about how your actions can influence those around you? Living a life that reflects Christ’s love and goodness isn’t just about personal righteousness; it’s about impacting others positively.

Apologetic Insight:

(from Greek ἀπολογία, ‘speaking in defense’) Defending and explaining faith with reason and evidence.

C.S. Lewis, in his book “Mere Christianity,” writes, “Do not waste time bothering whether you ‘love’ your neighbor; act as if you did. As soon as we do this, we find one of the great secrets. When you are behaving as if you loved someone, you will presently come to love them.” This insight reminds us that our ethical behavior is not just about avoiding sin but actively demonstrating Christ’s love.

The Apostle Paul tells us in Romans 12:2, “Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect.” By living ethically, we not only honor God but also serve as beacons of hope and truth in a world often shrouded in darkness.

Encouragement & Application:

Your daily choices matter. Each act of kindness, honesty, or self-control can be a witness to the transformative power of Christ in your life. Let your life be a testament to His goodness, encouraging others to seek the same light. Remember to:

  • Pray for guidance: Ask God to show you how to live ethically in your daily life.
  • Read and meditate on Scripture: Allow God’s word to shape your conscience and actions.
  • Engage with a mentor: Seek advice from someone who models ethical Christian living.

Reflection Questions:

  1. How have you seen or experienced ethical living influencing others?
  2. What specific actions can you take to ‘shine as a light’ in your community or school?

Prayer:

Dear God, help us to live lives that reflect Your holiness. Empower us by Your Holy Spirit to be lights in a dark world, showing others Your love through our actions. Let our ethical choices bring glory to You and draw others to Your saving grace. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
