Life Within Life

#BoldBeliefDevotional by Paul Natekin

Key Bible Verse:

“For you created my inmost being; you knit me together in my mother’s womb. I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made; your works are wonderful, I know that full well. My frame was not hidden from you when I was made in the secret place, when I was woven together in the depths of the earth.” – Psalm 139:13-15

Have you ever considered the profound mystery of life, especially the life that begins inside the womb? Scripture reminds us that God is intimately involved in our creation. The Bible clearly shows that an unborn baby, though residing in the mother’s body, is its own unique human being—woven together by the Creator with intentionality and purpose.

Apologetic Insight:

(from Greek ἀπολογία, ‘speaking in defense’) Defending and explaining faith with reason and evidence.

The argument that a fetus is merely part of the mother’s body overlooks the fact that the life being nurtured in the womb is distinct and self-contained. As seen in Psalm 139:13-15, God’s intimate craftsmanship is evident even before birth. When modern science detects brain-wave activity as early as one and a half months after conception, it reinforces what Scripture has long taught: that human life, however nascent, carries the divine imprint.

Esteemed thinkers like John Lennox and C.S. Lewis have emphasized that the inherent dignity of human life doesn’t depend on consciousness or external milestones. Just as we would never justify the taking of an unconscious or sleeping person’s life, so too should we view the act of ending the life of an unborn child as equally grave. The notion that tragic circumstances—such as those involving rape—could morally justify abortion confuses the culpability of one sin with the penalization of an innocent life. In doing so, it diminishes the value of a child created in God’s image. As we ponder these truths, we are challenged to reject any rationalization that compromises the sanctity of life.

Psalm 139 powerfully affirms that every human being is crafted by God with care and purpose from the very beginning. This divine involvement is a timeless reminder that the value of life is not determined by location or degree of development but by being made in the likeness of a loving Creator. Every human, whether in the womb or beyond, deserves protection and respect because their life is a masterpiece of Divine artistry.

Encouragement & Application:

If you find yourself wrestling with these challenging questions, know that doubts can lead to a deeper understanding of God’s heart for life. Embrace the truth that every life is sacred and that this belief is rooted deeply in both Scripture and reason. Strengthen your faith by meditating on these truths, engaging with trusted mentors, and remaining open to the insight found in both Scripture and thoughtful apologetics. Stand firm in the conviction that life, in every form, is a sacred gift entrusted to us.

Reflection Questions:

  1. How does the affirmation of being “fearfully and wonderfully made” impact your view of the unborn and their inherent value?
  2. In what ways can you engage in respectful conversations that uphold the sanctity of life while acknowledging the complexities of difficult situations?

Prayer:

Heavenly Father, thank You for the intricate and loving way You form every life, beginning in the womb. Help us to see each person as a precious creation, made in Your image from the very start. Grant us wisdom and courage to stand for the sanctity of life in a culture that often values convenience over truth. Comfort and guide those facing complex situations, and let Your justice and love prevail. In Jesus’ name we pray, Amen.
