Fornication and Adultery

#BoldBeliefDevotional by Paul Natekin

Key Bible Verse:

“Marriage should be honored by all, and the marriage bed kept pure, for God will judge the adulterer and all the sexually immoral.” — Hebrews 13:4 (NIV)

Have you ever paused to consider just how beautifully intricate God’s design for human sexuality is? It’s easy to feel overwhelmed when society sends mixed messages, but Scripture reminds us that sex is a gift—a good and purposeful part of God’s creation. In its purest form, sexual intimacy is meant to be experienced within the loving covenant of marriage.

Apologetic Insight:

(from Greek ἀπολογία, ‘speaking in defense’) Defending and explaining faith with reason and evidence.

Throughout Scripture, we see that God sanctifies sexuality when it is lived out in its intended context. The Bible teaches that God created sex for companionship, unity, and procreation, as seen in Genesis 2:24 and Genesis 1:28. The apostle Paul writes in 1 Corinthians 6:18 that our bodies are temples of the Holy Spirit, and therefore deserve to be kept pure. Thoughtful apologists like William Lane Craig and C.S. Lewis have emphasized that our sexual nature is not an accident but a deliberate gift designed to reflect the faithful and covenantal love of Christ. This view is further supported by the logical consistency within the Christian worldview: if everything God made is good (1 Timothy 4:4), then when we abide by His design—even in something as personal as sexuality—we experience the fullness of the good that He intends for us.

Scriptural Tie-In:

Hebrews 13:4 encapsulates the call to honor the sanctity of marriage, reminding us that purity in our sexual relationships is not about legalistic restriction but about reflecting God’s intentional plan. By keeping our bodies and hearts committed to the marriage covenant, we stand as witnesses to the love and faithfulness that God demonstrates toward us.

Encouragement & Application:

If you’re struggling with the pressures or confusions surrounding sexual purity, know that God’s word offers clarity and hope. Embracing His design means valuing oneself enough to set boundaries and seeking relationships where mutual respect and commitment align with biblical teaching. Consider taking practical steps: invest time in Scripture, engage in open and honest conversations with trusted mentors, and prioritize community support that reinforces God’s standards for purity.

Reflection Questions:

  1. How does understanding that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit change the way you view your sexuality?
  2. In what ways can you honor God’s design for intimacy in your current relationships and choices?
  3. What practical steps can you take this week to grow in commitment to purity as taught in Scripture?

Prayer:

Dear Lord, thank You for designing sexuality as a beautiful gift that reflects Your love and wisdom. Help me to embrace Your plan and to honor the sacred boundaries You have established, even when the world around me sends confusing messages. Guide me to seek purity and to make choices that honor You. Strengthen me through Your Holy Spirit, and let my life be a testimony to the beauty of living according to Your truth. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
