Unveiling the Messiah

#BoldBeliefDevotional by Paul Natekin

Key Bible Verse:

“But what about you?” he asked. “Who do you say I am?” Simon Peter answered, “You are the Messiah, the Son of the living God.” — Matthew 16:15-16 (NIV)

Have you ever felt like you were waiting for something big, but it turned out to be different from what you expected? That’s how it was for many Jews in the first century, eagerly anticipating a Messiah who would free them from Roman rule. Yet, Jesus had a different mission, and He was careful about how He revealed it.

Apologetic Insight:

(from Greek ἀπολογία, ‘speaking in defense’) Defending and explaining faith with reason and evidence.

Understanding why Jesus was cautious about revealing His identity can help us appreciate His wisdom and strategic approach to His ministry. As J. Warner Wallace notes, Jesus understood the importance of timing and context in His revelation. He knew that prematurely declaring Himself as the Messiah would stir up political expectations that would overshadow His true mission of spiritual salvation.

Moreover, as William Lane Craig explains , Jesus had to consider the theological readiness of His audience. The concept of the Trinity was not fully grasped in Old Testament times, and a sudden claim of divinity would have caused confusion and distraction. Instead, Jesus gradually unveiled His identity, allowing those who truly sought the truth to come to a deeper understanding of His role as the Son of God.

In Matthew 16:15-16, we see this process culminate when Peter, inspired by God, declares Jesus as the Messiah and the Son of the living God. This moment reflects the gradual revelation Jesus employed throughout His ministry, aligning perfectly with His purpose and the readiness of His followers.

Encouragement & Application:

Just like Jesus considered His audience, we should be mindful of how we share our faith with others. It’s okay to have questions and to seek understanding slowly. By spending time in prayer and reading the Bible, you can grow in your understanding of who Jesus is and how He wants to work in your life. Don’t be afraid to ask questions and engage with a community that can support your faith journey.

Reflection Questions:

  1. How does Jesus’ gradual revelation of His identity challenge your expectations of Him?
  2. In what ways can you be more patient and understanding with others as they explore their faith?

Prayer:

Dear Jesus, thank You for Your wisdom and patience in revealing who You are. Help us to understand Your mission more deeply and to share Your love with others in a way that respects their journey. Guide us as we seek to know You better and to follow You more closely. Amen.
