Be Salt and Light

#BoldBeliefDevotional by Paul Natekin

Key Bible Verse:

“You are the light of the world. A city set on a hill cannot be hidden.” — Matthew 5:14 (ESV)

Ever feel like your faith is hidden away, not making much of an impact? Jesus challenges us to be more than just background noise in the world; He calls us to be salt and light.

Apologetic Insight:

(from Greek ἀπολογία, ‘speaking in defense’) Defending and explaining faith with reason and evidence.

C.S. Lewis once wrote, “I believe in Christianity as I believe that the sun has risen: not only because I see it, but because by it I see everything else.” This idea reminds us that our faith should illuminate the world, providing clarity and preservation. Just as salt preserves food, Christians are called to preserve the moral fabric of society (Norman Geisler, “Christian Apologetics”). However, this impact is only possible if we remain pure and uncompromised in our faith. Paul warns us in Romans 12:2 (NIV), “Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind.” Our light shines brightest when we stand apart from the darkness, reflecting Christ’s purity and righteousness.

Encouragement & Application:

Remember, your faith isn’t meant to be a secret. Like a city on a hill, you’re called to be visible. Here are some practical ways to let your light shine:

  • Engage in honest conversations about your faith. Don’t shy away from sharing what you believe.
  • Live out your faith in everyday actions, showing kindness, honesty, and integrity.
  • Seek personal purity through regular prayer, Bible study, and accountability with fellow believers.

Reflection Questions:

  1. In what areas of your life do you feel your faith could shine brighter?
  2. How can you actively engage with the world around you to be a positive influence for Christ?

Prayer:

Lord Jesus, help us to be both salt and light in this world. Strengthen our commitment to You, purify our hearts, and make us agents of Your love and truth. Let our lives reflect Your glory, drawing others to know You. In Your precious name, Amen.
