Defending the Faith

#BoldBeliefDevotional by Paul Natekin

Key Bible Verse:

“But in your hearts honor Christ the Lord as holy, always being prepared to make a defense to anyone who asks you for a reason for the hope that is in you; yet do it with gentleness and respect.” — 1 Peter 3:15 (ESV)

Ever felt the need to defend your faith when someone challenges your beliefs? It’s not about arguing or being confrontational, but about being equipped to share the truth of Christ with gentleness and respect.

Apologetic Insight:

(from Greek ἀπολογία, ‘speaking in defense’) Defending and explaining faith with reason and evidence.

Apologetics, as derived from the Greek word “apologia,” means to make a defense. As Christians, we are called to follow the example of Jesus, who often engaged in debate to challenge wrong beliefs (Matthew 23). The Apostle Paul also demonstrated this when he reasoned with the Jews and Gentiles (Acts 17:15-34; 18:4).

Dr. William Lane Craig highlights, “Apologetics is not just about winning arguments; it’s about removing intellectual obstacles that prevent people from coming to faith in Christ.” Apologetics empowers us to share our faith with confidence, knowing we have solid reasons for our beliefs.

Encouragement & Application:

Remember, defending your faith is an act of love. It’s not about proving someone wrong but about lovingly sharing the truth that can set people free. Engage with the Scriptures, learn from trusted apologists, and prepare yourself to give a reason for the hope that is within you.

Reflection Questions:

  1. How can understanding apologetics strengthen your personal faith and witness?
  2. What are some loving ways you can engage in apologetics with someone who holds different beliefs?

Prayer:

Lord Jesus, thank You for the gift of apologetics, which helps us to share the truth of Your gospel with clarity and love. Help us to honor You in our hearts and be ready to give a defense of our faith with gentleness and respect. Equip us with wisdom and grace to engage with others in a way that reflects Your love. In Your holy name, Amen.
