Desire for More

#BoldBeliefDevotional by Paul Natekin

Key Bible Verse:

“Do not lay up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy and where thieves break in and steal, but lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust destroys and where thieves do not break in and steal.” — Matthew 6:19-20 (ESV)

Ever found yourself wanting more stuff, even when you already have a lot? It’s natural to desire things, but what if this desire is actually steering us away from what really matters?

Apologetic Insight:

(from Greek ἀπολογία, ‘speaking in defense’) Defending and explaining faith with reason and evidence.

In his book “The Case for Faith,” Lee Strobel interviews Dr. Peter Kreeft, who explains, “The lure of wealth can become an idol that distracts us from our true treasure in Christ.” This aligns with Jesus’ warning in Luke 12:15, where He cautions us against covetousness, emphasizing that life isn’t about accumulating possessions.

Paul’s words in 1 Timothy 6:9-10 echo this truth, highlighting how the desire to be rich can trap us in a cycle of harmful desires. But Jesus doesn’t just warn us; He provides the antidote in Matthew 6:19-20. By focusing on eternal treasures, we are reminded that our true wealth lies in our relationship with God, not in material possessions.

Encouragement & Application:

Remember, it’s not about how much you have, but how you steward what God has given you. Whether you’re rich or poor, the challenge is the same: to find contentment in Christ, not in our circumstances. Reflect on your desires. Are they drawing you closer to or further from God?

Reflection Questions:

  1. How does your desire for material things compare to your desire for spiritual growth?
  2. What steps can you take to ensure your heart is focused on eternal treasures?

Prayer:

Heavenly Father, help me to see the world through Your eyes. Teach me to value the eternal over the temporary, to find joy in Your presence rather than in possessions. Guide me to use what You’ve given me wisely, as a steward of Your blessings. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
