#BoldBeliefDevotional by Paul Natekin
Key Bible Verse:
“Beloved, although I was very eager to write to you about our common salvation, I found it necessary to write appealing to you to contend for the faith that was once for all delivered to the saints.” — Jude 1:3 (ESV)
Have you ever felt the need to stand up for what you believe in, especially when it comes to your faith? Sometimes, the world can make us question our beliefs, but Jude reminds us that we must contend for the truth of Christianity.
Apologetic Insight:
(from Greek ἀπολογία, ‘speaking in defense’) Defending and explaining faith with reason and evidence.
Jude’s call to “contend for the faith” echoes the intense struggle of an athlete, as noted by Richard Howe, who points out that the Greek word “agonia” implies an athletic competition where one must exert themselves to the utmost. This struggle isn’t just physical; it’s intellectual and spiritual as well.
C.S. Lewis encourages us to have an “examined faith,” where we can defend our beliefs with reason and understanding. He writes, “I believe in Christianity as I believe that the Sun has risen, not only because I see it, but because by it, I see everything else.” This insight reminds us that our faith, delivered once for all, provides a lens through which we understand the world and our place in it.
Encouragement & Application:
Like athletes training for a competition, we must equip ourselves with God’s Word. Here are some practical steps:
- Study Scripture: Immerse yourself in the Bible to know what you believe and why.
- Engage in Discussion: Don’t shy away from honest questions; they’re opportunities to grow.
- Find a Mentor: Connect with someone who can guide you through the intricacies of faith.
Reflection Questions:
- How does the idea of contending for the faith resonate with your personal journey?
- What steps can you take to become better equipped in defending your faith?
Prayer:
Lord, give us the strength and wisdom to contend for the faith You’ve delivered to us. Help us to stand firm, not with aggression, but with the confidence of knowing Your truth. Equip us with Your Word and the grace to share it. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
