God’s Word: The Heartbeat of Faith

#BoldBeliefDevotional by Paul Natekin

Key Bible Verse:

“For the word of God is living and active, sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing to the division of soul and of spirit, of joints and of marrow, and discerning the thoughts and intentions of the heart.” — Hebrews 4:12 (ESV)

Have you ever noticed how some churches seem to be moving away from teaching directly from the Bible? It’s like they’re trying to make faith “easier” or more “relevant” by sidelining the very Word that’s meant to guide us. But if Jesus emphasized the importance of abiding in His Word for true discipleship, why are we tempted to do otherwise?

Apologetic Insight:

(from Greek ἀπολογία, ‘speaking in defense’) Defending and explaining faith with reason and evidence.

Paul Copan, in his book “Is God a Moral Monster?”, argues that the Bible isn’t just a collection of ancient writings; it’s God’s revelation to us, designed to shape our lives and hearts. He says, “The Bible’s role is not just to inform but to transform.” This aligns with Scripture’s own assertion in 2 Timothy 3:16-17 that all Scripture is “profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness.”

C.S. Lewis, in his work “Mere Christianity,” reminds us, “We must not be content with the mere fact that Christianity is true; we must also live it out.” This means engaging with God’s Word, allowing it to challenge and change us.

Encouragement & Application:

Remember, God’s Word is alive and active. It’s not just a collection of stories or moral teachings; it’s the very breath of God, meant to equip us for every good work. If you’re in a church or community where the Bible is being marginalized, take heart in knowing that you can still seek it out for yourself. Dive into Scripture daily, ask questions, and find a community that values the Bible’s authority.

Reflection Questions:

  1. How does the Bible challenge your current understanding or practices in your faith journey?
  2. What steps can you take to ensure that God’s Word remains central in your life, even if your church or community seems to be moving away from it?

Prayer:

Dear Heavenly Father, help us to hold fast to Your Word. Let it be our guide, our comfort, and our truth. In a world where Your teachings are sometimes overshadowed by entertainment or human wisdom, give us the courage to seek You first through Scripture. Equip us to live out Your Word in our lives, to share it with others, and to defend it with gentleness and respect. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
