#BoldBeliefDevotional by Paul Natekin
Key Bible Verse:
“And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose.” — Romans 8:28 (NIV)
Have you ever felt discouraged by the actions of some Christians throughout history? It’s tough to reconcile the love of Jesus with the atrocities committed in His name. But here’s the truth: Christianity isn’t defined by the behavior of its followers, but by the life and teachings of Jesus Christ Himself.
Apologetic Insight:
(from Greek ἀπολογία, ‘speaking in defense’) Defending and explaining faith with reason and evidence.
As J. Warner Wallace points out, “The church is a hospital for sinners, not a museum for saints.” This perspective helps us understand that while Christians are called to reflect Christ’s love, they are still fallible humans wrestling with sin. Romans 3:23 reminds us that “all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God.” Even authentic Christians can make grave mistakes, but this doesn’t negate the truth of the Gospel.
William Lane Craig emphasizes, “The truth of Christianity stands or falls on the person of Jesus Christ, not on the behavior of Christians.” When we focus on Jesus’ teachings, like loving our enemies (Matthew 5:44), we see the true heart of Christianity. The Crusades and Inquisition, while tragic, were exceptions, not the rule of church history, as Norman Geisler notes, “The church has been characterized by love, benevolence, and compassion throughout most of its history.”
Encouragement & Application:
Remember, your faith isn’t weakened by the sins of others. Instead, let these historical realities drive you deeper into understanding Jesus’ message of grace and redemption. Spend time reading about His life in the Gospels, and engage in honest discussions with mentors or peers about how to live out His teachings today.
Reflection Questions:
- How does Romans 8:28 encourage you when considering the imperfections of Christians?
- What steps can you take to focus more on Jesus’ teachings rather than the actions of His followers?
Prayer:
Lord, thank You for Your grace that covers our imperfections. Help us to look to Jesus as the perfect example of Your love, and guide us to live out His teachings in our daily lives. Strengthen our faith and give us wisdom to navigate the complexities of church history. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
