Mercy-Giving: A Reflection of Our Faith

#BoldBeliefDevotional by Paul Natekin

Key Bible Verse:

“And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose.” — Romans 8:28 (NIV)

Have you ever thought about how our actions reflect our faith? When we see someone in need, our response can reveal a lot about our relationship with God. Let’s explore the concept of giving as a reflection of our love for Christ.

Apologetic Insight:

(from Greek ἀπολογία, ‘speaking in defense’) Defending and explaining faith with reason and evidence.

Norman Geisler, in his work on Christian ethics, points out that our love for God is demonstrated by our love for others, which is a key component of Christian charity. As he explains, “Love for God and neighbor are inseparable. If we truly love God, we will show it by loving others in tangible ways.” This aligns with the New Testament teaching that faith without deeds is dead (James 2:26).

Greg Koukl, in his apologetic approach, emphasizes the importance of aligning our actions with our beliefs: “If we say we believe in God’s mercy, our lives should reflect that mercy in our actions towards others.” This perspective helps us understand that giving isn’t just about meeting physical needs but about embodying the mercy of Christ in our daily lives.

Encouragement & Application:

Remember, showing charity isn’t just about giving money or food; it’s about showing the love and mercy of Christ in every interaction. When you encounter someone in need, take a moment to see them through the eyes of Jesus. Ask God for opportunities to show His love through your actions.

Reflection Questions:

  1. How does giving to others reflect your faith in God?
  2. What small acts of mercy can you perform today to show God’s love to someone in need?

Prayer:

Heavenly Father, thank You for Your endless mercy and kindness toward us. Help us to reflect Your love in our actions, especially when we encounter those in need. Show us how to give not just for recognition, but out of a genuine heart of compassion. Let our charity be a true reflection of our love for You. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
