Peace Beyond the Grave

#BoldBeliefDevotional by Paul Natekin

Key Bible Verse:

“But the wicked are like the tossing sea, for it cannot be quiet, and its waters toss up mire and dirt. ‘There is no peace,’ says my God, ‘for the wicked.'” — Isaiah 57:20-21 (ESV)

Have you ever wondered what happens after we die? The thought of eternal rest can be comforting, but what if our choices now impact our peace beyond the grave?

Apologetic Insight:

(from Greek ἀπολογία, ‘speaking in defense’) Defending and explaining faith with reason and evidence.

William Lane Craig has argued that if God exists, there is an objective moral law, and therefore, an afterlife where justice is meted out. He explains, “If there is no God, then whatever happens after death is morally indifferent. But if God exists, then the moral character of our lives does have eternal significance.” This aligns with the biblical teaching that our eternal destiny is influenced by our relationship with Christ.

John Lennox adds to this by saying, “If there is a God, then there is an afterlife, and if there is an afterlife, then what we do in this life matters.” This resonates with the message of Isaiah, where God speaks of the unrest of the wicked, contrasting it with the peace found in righteousness.

Encouragement & Application:

Understanding that our choices have eternal consequences can be daunting, but it’s also an invitation to seek peace through Christ. The Bible promises that through faith in Jesus, we can have peace with God (Romans 5:1). Here are some steps to consider:

  • Repentance: Turn away from sin and towards Christ, acknowledging His sacrifice for our redemption.
  • Faith: Trust in Jesus as your Savior, knowing that He offers forgiveness and a new life.
  • Community: Surround yourself with believers who can support and guide you in your spiritual journey.

Reflection Questions:

  1. How does the idea of eternal consequences affect your daily decisions?
  2. What steps can you take today to ensure you have peace with God for eternity?

Prayer:

Heavenly Father, thank You for the gift of eternal life through Jesus. Help us to live in a way that honors You, seeking peace with You now and for eternity. Show us how to turn from sin, embrace Your forgiveness, and live in the peace that only You can give. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
