The Wisdom of Time Management Boundaries

#BoldBeliefDevotional by Paul Natekin

Key Bible Verse:

“Teach us to number our days, that we may gain a heart of wisdom.” — Psalm 90:12 (NIV)

Time is one of our most precious resources, yet it often feels like it slips through our fingers. In our busy lives, filled with studies, extracurricular activities, and the constant pull of digital distractions, setting boundaries around our time is essential. These boundaries help us to prioritize what truly matters, ensuring we have time for spiritual growth, meaningful relationships, and personal well-being. Let’s explore how managing our time with wisdom can bring us closer to God’s purpose for our lives.

Apologetic Insight:

(from Greek ἀπολογία, ‘speaking in defense’) Defending and explaining faith with reason and evidence.

Dr. John Lennox, in his discussions on faith and science, often speaks about the stewardship of our time. He says, “Time is a gift from God, and like all gifts, it should be used wisely for His glory.” This wisdom echoes the sentiment of Psalm 90:12, where Moses prays for God to teach us to number our days, highlighting the importance of time management in gaining a heart of wisdom.

When we manage our time effectively, we’re not just organizing our schedules; we’re aligning our lives with God’s priorities. This means balancing our time between work and rest, ensuring space for spiritual growth, and limiting distractions that pull us away from what truly matters. Failing to set these boundaries can lead to burnout, neglect of important relationships, and spiritual stagnation.

Encouragement & Application:

If you’re feeling overwhelmed by your schedule or struggling with time management, remember that these challenges are opportunities to grow in wisdom. Here are some steps to help you:

  • Pray for Guidance: Ask God to show you how to use your time in a way that honors Him.
  • Prioritize: Set clear priorities. Schedule time for spiritual growth, rest, and meaningful interactions.
  • Set Boundaries: Limit screen time. Decide on specific times for study, work, relaxation, and spiritual activities, and stick to them.
  • Seek Accountability: Share your time management goals with a friend or mentor who can help keep you accountable.

Remember, setting time management boundaries isn’t about restriction; it’s about creating space for what’s truly important in life.

Reflection Questions:

  • How have you seen the impact of poor time management in your life or in the lives of others?
  • What practical steps can you take to establish or reinforce time management boundaries that align with your spiritual and personal goals?

Prayer:

Dear God, thank You for the gift of time. Teach us to number our days, to use our time wisely, and to prioritize our life according to Your will. Help us to set boundaries that foster spiritual growth, meaningful relationships, and personal well-being. When we’re tempted to let our time slip away, remind us of Your purpose for our lives. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
