Understanding Evil’s Place in God’s World

#BoldBeliefDevotional by Paul Natekin

Key Bible Verse:

“Give thanks to the Lord, for he is good; his love endures forever.” — 1 Chronicles 16:34 (NIV)

Ever wondered how a loving and all-powerful God can coexist with evil? It’s a question that can shake our faith to the core. But let’s dive in together and seek some answers.

Apologetic Insight:

(from Greek ἀπολογία, ‘speaking in defense’) Defending and explaining faith with reason and evidence.

The problem of evil is indeed a tough one, but it’s not without answers. As C.S. Lewis, a prominent Christian apologist, noted in his book “The Problem of Pain,” “God whispers to us in our pleasures, speaks in our conscience, but shouts in our pain: it is His megaphone to rouse a deaf world.” This insight suggests that God uses suffering to draw us closer to Him and to reveal His goodness and love even in the midst of evil.

William Lane Craig, another respected apologist, argues that God’s goodness and omnipotence are not incompatible with the existence of evil. In his work on “The Problem of Evil,” Craig explains that God’s greater purpose may involve allowing temporary evil for the sake of greater good, such as the development of virtues like courage, compassion, and patience in His creation.

Scripture itself affirms God’s goodness and power. 1 Chronicles 16:34 reminds us of God’s enduring love and goodness. And yet, we live in a world where evil exists. The Bible doesn’t shy away from this reality; it acknowledges the presence of moral and natural evil. But it also points us to a God who is working through it all for our ultimate good.

Encouragement & Application:

Facing the reality of evil can be daunting, but it’s an opportunity to deepen your faith. Remember, it’s okay to have questions and doubts. Use them as a springboard to seek God more earnestly. Spend time in prayer and Scripture, asking God to reveal His goodness and power to you, even in the midst of life’s challenges. Engage with a mentor or a community that can support you through these questions.

Reflection Questions:

  1. How does the assurance of God’s goodness in 1 Chronicles 16:34 impact your view of evil in the world?
  2. What steps can you take to trust in God’s greater purpose, even when you face evil or suffering?

Prayer:

Dear Lord, in the face of evil and suffering, help us to hold fast to the truth of Your goodness and power. Show us how You are working for our good, even in the darkest times. Strengthen our faith and give us the courage to trust in You. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
