Understanding God’s Sovereignty

#BoldBeliefDevotional by Paul Natekin

Key Bible Verse:

“I form the light and create darkness, I bring prosperity and create disaster; I, the Lord, do all these things.” — Isaiah 45:7 (NIV)

Have you ever struggled with the idea that God might be involved in evil? It’s a tough question that can challenge our understanding of God’s nature. Let’s explore this together, looking at some key verses and insights from trusted apologists.

Apologetic Insight:

(from Greek ἀπολογία, ‘speaking in defense’) Defending and explaining faith with reason and evidence.

Isaiah 45:7 can seem troubling at first glance, as it mentions God creating “disaster.” However, as noted by Hebrew linguists, the word for “disaster” or “calamity” doesn’t necessarily imply moral evil but can refer to natural disasters or plagues, like those in Egypt. As William Lane Craig explains, “God’s judgments are righteous and just, even when they involve calamity.”

In Exodus 4:21, we see God hardening Pharaoh’s heart. Yet, as Norman Geisler points out, “Pharaoh hardened his own heart first, seven times before God did so.” This indicates that God’s hardening was a response to Pharaoh’s own stubbornness. J. Warner Wallace adds, “God’s actions are always in line with His righteous judgment. He gives mercy to those who accept it and judges those who reject Him.”

These insights help us understand that God’s actions are always consistent with His holy, righteous, and just nature. He doesn’t cause moral evil but allows consequences to play out according to human choices.

Encouragement & Application:

It’s okay to wrestle with these difficult questions. They can actually lead to a deeper understanding of God’s character. Take time to read and meditate on these passages, asking God to reveal His truth to you. Don’t hesitate to discuss your thoughts with a mentor or in a faith community where you can grow together.

Reflection Questions:

  1. How does understanding the context of Isaiah 45:7 and Exodus 4:21 change your perspective on God’s involvement in evil?
  2. What steps can you take to deepen your trust in God’s righteousness and justice?

Prayer:

Dear Lord, thank You for Your perfect nature and the ways You work in our world. Help us to trust in Your righteousness and justice, even when we struggle to understand Your ways. Guide us to seek truth and grow in our faith. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
