Work for His Glory

#BoldBeliefDevotional by Paul Natekin

Key Bible Verse:

“Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for human masters.” — Colossians 3:23 (NIV)

Have you ever noticed how easy it can be to let procrastination sneak in or why sometimes that urge to hit snooze seems too tempting to resist? You’re not alone. Even Solomon, renowned for his wisdom, warned us about the dangers of laziness and the pitfalls of living a life governed by half-hearted work.

Apologetic Insight:

(from Greek ἀπολογία, ‘speaking in defense’) Defending and explaining faith with reason and evidence.

Solomon’s writings in Proverbs paint a clear picture: laziness not only limits our potential but also leads to hardship. Verses like Proverbs 6:6-9 remind us to learn from the ant—a creature that, without needing constant supervision, works diligently in its season. This isn’t just an ancient observation; it’s a principle of life that echoes through history and is supported by many Christian thinkers. For instance, C.S. Lewis pointed out that the challenges we face—including the temptation to be lazy—invite us to step into a higher, more purposeful way of living. When we work wholeheartedly, we honor God’s design for us. The call to work isn’t simply to earn a living, but to live out our faith in everyday actions, reflecting the character of Christ in a broken world.

Colossians 3:23 encapsulates this idea perfectly. When we choose to work as if we’re serving the Lord directly, our daily tasks—however small—become acts of worship. Just as Solomon’s observations urge us to avoid complacency, this verse calls us to a higher standard of diligence and commitment, reminding us that our work matters in God’s grand plan.

Encouragement & Application:

Remember, struggling with laziness doesn’t mean you’re failing in your faith. Instead, it’s a gentle invitation to reexamine how you’re spending your time. Consider setting small, achievable goals: organize your day, help out at home or church, or simply spend time in prayer asking God for renewed energy and focus. When you work with a purposeful heart, you not only create a better life for yourself but also shine a light for others, pointing them to the hope found in Jesus.

Reflection Questions:

  1. How does Colossians 3:23 challenge your current approach to daily tasks and responsibilities?
  2. In what ways can you emulate the diligent example of the ant in your own life?
  3. What practical steps can you take this week to ensure your work reflects your commitment to the Lord?

Prayer:

Dear Lord, thank You for the wisdom found in Your Word that calls us to work diligently and purposefully. Help me to overcome the temptations of laziness and to see every task as an opportunity to serve You. Grant me strength and focus so that my daily work may honor You and be a testament to my faith. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
