#BoldBeliefDevotional by Paul Natekin
Key Bible Verse:
“Now Jesus did many other signs in the presence of the disciples, which are not written in this book; but these are written so that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that by believing you may have life in his name.” — John 20:30-31 (ESV)
Have you ever wondered about the miracles described in the Bible? They seem incredible, don’t they? These acts of divine power are more than just stories; they carry deep meaning and purpose.
Apologetic Insight:
(from Greek ἀπολογία, ‘speaking in defense’) Defending and explaining faith with reason and evidence.
The Greek words used in the New Testament for miracles—dunamis, semeion, terata, and erga—each highlight different aspects of these divine acts. As J. Warner Wallace explains, “Miracles are not just supernatural events; they are signposts pointing to the reality of God” (ColdCaseChristianity.com). For instance, Jesus’ miracles were not merely displays of power but were signs (semeion) meant to affirm His divine identity and mission, as seen in John 20:30-31. William Lane Craig adds, “The miracles of Jesus are well-attested in the Gospels and serve as evidence for His divine nature” (ReasonableFaith.org). They evoke wonder (terata), demonstrate God’s inherent power (dunamis), and serve a practical purpose (erga), such as healing the sick or feeding the hungry.
Encouragement & Application:
When you encounter doubts about miracles, remember that they are not just random acts but purposeful signs from God. Engage with the Scriptures, explore the accounts of Jesus’ miracles, and consider how they strengthen your faith. Don’t hesitate to discuss these wonders with a mentor or within your faith community to deepen your understanding.
Reflection Questions:
- How do the miracles of Jesus impact your belief in His divine identity?
- In what ways can you see God’s purposes being fulfilled through the miracles described in the Bible?
Prayer:
Lord, thank You for the miracles that reveal Your power and love. Help us to see them as signs that point to You and strengthen our faith. Guide us to trust in Your ability to work wonders in our lives. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
