Beyond the Stars: Trusting God’s Guidance

#BoldBeliefDevotional by Paul Natekin

Key Bible Verse:

“The heavens declare the glory of God; the skies proclaim the work of his hands. Day after day they pour forth speech; night after night they reveal knowledge. They have no speech, they use no words; no sound is heard from them. Yet their voice goes out into all the earth, their words to the ends of the world.” — Psalm 19:1-4 (NIV)

Have you ever found yourself curious about astrology or even relied on it for guidance? It’s easy to feel drawn to the stars for answers, but what does God say about this practice? Let’s explore together why we can trust God’s guidance over any other source.

Apologetic Insight:

(from Greek ἀπολογία, ‘speaking in defense’) Defending and explaining faith with reason and evidence.

Astrology promises insight and direction, yet the Bible warns us against it. Isaiah 47:15 explicitly denounces astrologers, and Daniel 2:2,10 confirms that true discernment comes only from God. As J. Warner Wallace points out in his work “The reliability of astrology is not supported by empirical evidence. Its predictions are often inconsistent and lack the precision that a truly divine source would provide.” Furthermore, Deuteronomy 4:19 and 18:9-12, along with Jeremiah 10:2, clearly prohibit the worship of heavenly bodies and any form of occultism.

Norman Geisler, in his writings, highlights the logical problems with astrology. He notes, “The arbitrary nature of astrological interpretations, the lack of consensus on the number of zodiac signs, and the failure to explain phenomena like the differing fates of twins or disasters affecting people of various zodiac signs undermine its credibility.”

Instead of looking to the stars for guidance, we can turn to the One who created them. Psalm 19:1-4 reminds us that the heavens declare God’s glory, not our destiny. As C.S. Lewis eloquently states in his reflections “The heavens are telling the glory of God and the firmament proclaims his handiwork. They speak of the Creator, not of the creature.”

Encouragement & Application:

If you’ve been tempted to seek guidance from astrology, remember that God offers a more reliable and loving source of direction through His Word and His Spirit. Strengthen your faith by regularly reading Scripture, praying for discernment, and connecting with a faith community that can support and guide you.

Reflection Questions:

  1. How has Psalm 19:1-4 changed your perspective on the role of the heavens?
  2. What steps can you take to seek God’s guidance instead of turning to astrology?

Prayer:

Lord, thank You for the beauty and majesty of the heavens that declare Your glory. Help us to trust in Your guidance and wisdom rather than seeking answers from astrology. Guide us in Your truth and protect us from deception. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
