Key Bible Verse:
“Do not turn to mediums or seek out spiritists, for you will be defiled by them. I am the Lord your God.” — Leviticus 19:31 (NIV)
Ever felt the pull towards something mysterious or forbidden? It’s natural to be curious about the unknown, but when it comes to the occult, God gives us clear guidance. Have you ever wondered why He’s so firm about staying away from it?
Apologetic Insight:
(from Greek ἀπολογία, ‘speaking in defense’) Defending and explaining faith with reason and evidence.
The Bible consistently warns against involvement in the occult, including magic and spiritism. As Norman Geisler points out, “The Bible is clear that God alone is to be worshiped and trusted, not any created being or power.” This stance is reinforced by the incident with Simon Magus in Acts 8:9-24, where Peter rebukes him for trying to buy the power of the Holy Spirit.
J. Warner Wallace, a former detective turned apologist, explains, “The occult represents a counterfeit to the true power of God. It’s a deception designed to distract us from the real source of life and truth.” This aligns with the narrative in Exodus where the magicians of Egypt could not replicate all of Moses’ miracles, showing God’s superior power (Exodus 7-9).
Scripture’s warnings against the occult are not merely about avoiding sin; they are about protecting our relationship with God. As Paul Copan notes, “Engaging in occult practices is a form of idolatry, placing trust in something other than God.” This is why Leviticus 19:31 explicitly states that turning to mediums and spiritists will defile us, drawing us away from the purity and holiness God desires for us.
Encouragement & Application:
Remember, the allure of the occult can be strong, but God’s guidance is stronger. If you’re feeling tempted, take a step back and focus on deepening your relationship with God. Spend time in prayer, immerse yourself in Scripture, and seek counsel from trusted Christian mentors. God’s power is more than enough for all your needs.
Reflection Questions:
- How does Leviticus 19:31 challenge your views on the occult?
- What steps can you take to stay firmly rooted in God’s truth and away from the devil’s turf?
Prayer:
Lord, thank You for Your clear guidance and protection. Help me to resist the allure of the occult and to trust fully in You. Strengthen my faith and keep me rooted in Your Word. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
