Belonging to Christ

Belonging to Christ

#BoldBeliefDevotional by Paul Natekin

Key Bible Verse:

“But Peter said, ‘Lord, I am ready to go with you both to prison and to death.’ Jesus said, ‘I tell you, Peter, the rooster will not crow this day, until you deny three times that you know me.'” — Luke 22:33-34 (ESV)

Have you ever wondered what it truly means to be called a Christian? It’s more than just a label; it signifies belonging to Christ. But how do we live out this identity, especially when faced with challenges and doubts?

Apologetic Insight:

(from Greek ἀπολογία, ‘speaking in defense’) Defending and explaining faith with reason and evidence.

The term “Christian” first emerged in Antioch around AD 42, as noted by J. Warner Wallace in his work on the historical reliability of the New Testament. This term distinguished Jesus’ followers as a unique group, separate from Judaism and other religions. The suffix “-ian” denoted belonging to a specific party, similar to how Herodians belonged to Herod and Caesarians to Caesar. As Greg Koukl explains , this signifies a deep loyalty and commitment to Christ, reflecting a life transformed by His teachings and sacrifice.

In Luke 22:33-34, we see Peter’s initial readiness to follow Jesus, yet his subsequent denial. This passage reminds us that being a “Christ-one” involves not just a declaration but a lived-out faith, even in the face of adversity. As C.S. Lewis eloquently states, “The Christian does not think God will love us because we are good, but that God will make us good because He loves us”. This underscores the transformative power of belonging to Christ, where our identity is rooted in His grace and love.

Encouragement & Application:

Living as a “Christ-one” means embracing your identity in Christ daily. It’s about allowing His love to shape your actions and thoughts. When doubts arise, remember that your faith is a journey, and it’s okay to ask questions. Engage with Scripture regularly, seek guidance from trusted mentors, and connect with a faith community that supports your growth in Christ.

Reflection Questions:

  1. How does understanding the origin and meaning of the term “Christian” impact your view of your faith?
  2. What practical steps can you take to live out your identity as a “Christ-one” in your daily life?

Prayer:

Dear Jesus, thank You for calling us Your own. Help us to live as true “Christ-ones,” reflecting Your love and grace in everything we do. Guide us through our doubts and strengthen our commitment to You. In Your holy name, Amen.
