Beware of Cults

Key Bible Verse:

“For no one can lay any foundation other than the one already laid, which is Jesus Christ.” — 1 Corinthians 3:11 (NIV)

Ever feel confused about what’s true in faith? With so many groups claiming to be Christian, it can be tough to know who’s really following Jesus. Let’s explore what makes Christianity unique and why it’s so important to stick to the essentials.

Apologetic Insight:

(from Greek ἀπολογία, ‘speaking in defense’) Defending and explaining faith with reason and evidence.

Norman Geisler emphasizes that “the essential doctrines of Christianity are non-negotiable because they are rooted in the very nature of God and His revelation to us.” The five key doctrines you mentioned — the inerrancy of the Bible, the Trinity, the deity and work of Jesus, the nature of humanity, and salvation by grace through faith — form the bedrock of our faith.

J. Warner Wallace, a former cold-case detective, stresses the importance of examining the historical evidence for Christianity. He notes, “The resurrection of Jesus Christ is the cornerstone of our faith. It’s historically verifiable and sets Christianity apart from other religions and cults.” This historical foundation supports the essential doctrines and helps us discern truth from falsehood.

The Apostle Paul reminds us in 1 Corinthians 3:11 that Jesus Christ is the only foundation for our faith. Any group that denies His deity, His resurrection, or the other essentials is building on a different foundation, leading people away from the truth.

Encouragement & Application:

It’s okay to have questions and doubts. In fact, asking questions can help you grow stronger in your faith. Take time to read the Bible, pray, and discuss these essentials with trusted mentors or Christian friends. Remember, staying rooted in the truth of Jesus will protect you from the confusion of cults.

Reflection Questions:

  1. Which of the five essential doctrines resonates with you the most, and why?
  2. How can you ensure that you’re building your faith on the foundation of Jesus Christ?

Prayer:

Lord, thank You for revealing Yourself to us through Your Word and Your Son, Jesus Christ. Help us to discern truth from error and to hold fast to the essentials of our faith. Give us wisdom to recognize and avoid the teachings of cults, and guide us in sharing Your truth with others. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
