Growing Closer to Jesus

#BoldBeliefDevotional by Paul Natekin

Key Bible Verse:

“But his delight is in the law of the Lord, and on his law he meditates day and night.” — Psalm 1:2 (NIV)

Have you ever noticed how the best friendships grow deeper over time? Whether it’s a close friend or a family member, the more moments you share, the better you understand them. It’s the same with Jesus. Knowing Him isn’t just about a one-time decision—it’s about building a real, ongoing relationship.

Apologetic Insight:

(from Greek ἀπολογία, ‘speaking in defense’) Defending and explaining faith with reason and evidence.

As C.S. Lewis once wrote, “Once you were not a people, but now you are the people of God; once you had not received mercy, but now you have received mercy.” This reminds us that a relationship with God transforms us, but it requires effort on our part. Just like in any meaningful connection, we need to invest time. The Bible encourages us to meditate on God’s Word day and night (Psalm 1:2) and to pray without ceasing (1 Thessalonians 5:17). Through these practices, we don’t just learn about Jesus—we come to know His heart, His desires, and what brings Him joy or grief. For instance, living in sin displeases Him (Acts 17:30), but seeking righteousness brings Him delight (Psalm 34:15). Isn’t it amazing to think we can grow that close to the Creator of the universe?

Encouragement & Application:

Building a relationship with Jesus doesn’t happen overnight, and that’s okay. Start small—spend a few minutes each day reading a verse or two from the Bible and reflecting on it. Talk to Him through prayer, sharing your joys, struggles, and questions. And don’t hesitate to connect with others who can walk alongside you in this journey, like a youth group or a trusted mentor. Every step you take brings you closer to understanding His love for you.

Reflection Questions:

  1. How can you carve out time each day to connect with Jesus through prayer or Scripture?
  2. What’s one thing you’ve learned about God’s character recently that surprised or encouraged you?
  3. Who in your life can help you grow in your relationship with Christ?

Prayer:

Dear Jesus, thank You for wanting a personal relationship with me. Help me to take the time to know You more—through Your Word, through prayer, and through the people You’ve placed in my life. Draw me closer to Your heart, and show me how to live in a way that honors You. I’m so grateful for Your love. In Your name, Amen.
