Miracles Can Happen

#BoldBeliefDevotional by Paul Natekin

Key Bible Verse:

“Jesus looked at them and said, ‘With man this is impossible, but with God all things are possible.'” — Matthew 19:26 (NIV)

Have you ever heard someone say that miracles can’t happen because they go against the laws of nature? It’s a common objection, but what if there’s more to the story? Let’s explore how our faith in Jesus can help us understand miracles in a new light.

Apologetic Insight:

(from Greek ἀπολογία, ‘speaking in defense’) Defending and explaining faith with reason and evidence.

Some atheists argue that miracles are impossible because they supposedly violate the laws of nature. However, as C.S. Lewis pointed out, “Miracles are a retelling in small letters of the very same story which is written across the whole world in letters too large for some of us to see.” When God performs a miracle, He isn’t breaking His own rules; He’s showing His power over them. The laws of nature are simply descriptions of how things usually work, not strict boundaries that God can’t cross.

John Lennox, a respected Christian apologist, explains, “The laws of nature are God’s regular way of working, but He is not bound by them. Just as a car manufacturer can override the normal operation of a car, so God can intervene in His creation.” This perspective helps us see that miracles aren’t a violation but a demonstration of God’s authority and love.

David Hume, an atheist philosopher, argued that miracles are unlikely because they contradict our experience of nature’s regularity. Yet, as Norman Geisler notes, “Hume’s argument assumes that we have experienced all possible events in the universe, which is an impossible claim.” Our limited experience can’t disprove the possibility of miracles; it can only show our need for faith in a God who can do the impossible.

Encouragement & Application:

Remember, miracles are not just stories from the past; they’re a testament to God’s ongoing work in the world. When you face doubts about miracles, turn to Matthew 19:26 and let it remind you that with God, all things are possible. Strengthen your faith by reading about the miracles of Jesus, talking to others about their experiences, and praying for God to open your eyes to His work around you.

Reflection Questions:

  1. How does the idea that God can supersede the laws of nature affect your view of miracles?
  2. What personal experiences or stories have you heard that might be considered miraculous?

Prayer:

Lord Jesus, thank You for showing us that with You, all things are possible. Help us to trust in Your power and love, even when the world tells us miracles can’t happen. Open our hearts to see Your work in our lives and give us the faith to believe in Your miracles. Amen.
