Trusting God’s Plan in Pain

#BoldBeliefDevotional by Paul Natekin

Key Bible Verse:

“We know that for those who love God all things work together for good, for those who are called according to his purpose.” — Romans 8:28 (ESV)

Ever felt like life’s thrown you a curveball you just can’t understand? You’re not alone. Joseph and Paul, two giants of faith, faced unimaginable hardships but trusted God’s bigger picture. Their stories remind us that even in the darkest moments, God is at work, weaving a tapestry of good from the threads of our pain.

Apologetic Insight:

(from Greek ἀπολογία, ‘speaking in defense’) Defending and explaining faith with reason and evidence.

As J. Warner Wallace points out, “God’s ability to bring good out of evil is one of the most compelling aspects of the Christian worldview.” Joseph’s life is a testament to this truth. Sold into slavery by his own brothers (Genesis 37-39), he faced years of uncertainty and suffering. Yet, as he later told his brothers, “You meant evil against me, but God meant it for good” (Genesis 50:20). This echoes the promise of Romans 8:28, that all things work together for good for those who love God.

Similarly, Paul’s life illustrates this principle. Despite being imprisoned multiple times (Acts 16:23-37; Ephesians 3:1; Philippians 1:7; Colossians 4:10; Philemon 9), he used these circumstances to pen some of the most influential letters in the New Testament. As William Lane Craig notes, “God can redeem even the most painful experiences for His purposes.” Paul’s trust in God’s sovereignty allowed him to see beyond his immediate suffering to the greater good God was orchestrating.

Encouragement & Application:

When life feels overwhelming, remember that your current struggles might be part of a larger plan. Trusting God doesn’t mean understanding everything, but it does mean believing that He’s working for your good. Take time to read stories like Joseph’s and Paul’s, and consider how you can lean into your faith during tough times. Connect with a mentor or community who can support you on this journey.

Reflection Questions:

  1. How does Romans 8:28 encourage you to view your current challenges?
  2. What steps can you take to trust God more deeply, even when you don’t see the outcome?

Prayer:

Lord, it’s hard to see the good in the midst of pain, but You promise that all things work together for our good. Help us to trust You, even when life doesn’t make sense. Strengthen our faith, and use our struggles to draw us closer to You. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
